Cotton vs Polyester vs Blends (CVC, TC): Which Fabric Should Your Clothing Brand Use?

Cotton vs Polyester vs Blends (CVC, TC): Which Fabric Should Your Clothing Brand Use?

“Should we go 100% cotton, or a cotton-polyester blend?” is probably the most common fabric question new clothing brands ask. Neither is simply better β€” each solves different problems, and the terms CVC and TC on quotes confuse many first-time buyers. This guide compares cotton, polyester and their common blends so you can choose the right fabric for your product, customer and price point.

Cotton: The Comfort Baseline

Cotton is a natural fibre, breathable and comfortable against skin, which is why it dominates everyday and kidswear. It absorbs moisture well and takes dye deeply. The trade-offs: it wrinkles, can shrink if not pre-treated, dries slowly, and loses shape or fades faster than synthetics with repeated washing. Grade matters a lot β€” combed, ring-spun cotton feels noticeably better than carded, open-end cotton, and costs more.

Polyester: The Performance Fibre

Polyester is a synthetic fibre. It is strong, dries quickly, resists wrinkles and shrinkage, and holds colour well. It is also less breathable, can feel warmer, holds odour more than natural fibres, and builds static. It suits sportswear, uniforms, outerwear linings and garments that face frequent washing.

What CVC and TC Mean

  • CVC (Chief Value Cotton) β€” cotton is the majority fibre, commonly around 60% cotton and 40% polyester. It keeps a cotton-like feel with better durability and shrinkage control.
  • TC (Tetron Cotton, i.e. polyester-cotton) β€” polyester is the majority, commonly around 65% polyester and 35% cotton. It is tougher, cheaper and quicker drying but less soft and breathable.

The exact ratios vary by mill, so always specify the composition in percentages on your tech pack instead of only writing “CVC” or “TC”.

Which Blend for Which Product

  • T-shirts and kidswear β€” 100% cotton or a cotton-rich blend for comfort.
  • Hoodies and sweatshirts β€” CVC fleece is popular: soft, warm and resists pilling and shrinkage better than pure cotton. Our hoodie guide covers weights and pricing.
  • Uniforms and workwear β€” TC or polyester-rich blends for durability and easy care.
  • Activewear β€” polyester-based, often with a little elastane. See our elastane guide.

Manufacturing Notes for Blends

Cotton and polyester are dyed with different dye systems, so blends need more careful processing to get consistent colour. Melange or heather looks often come from mixing pre-dyed fibres and are a design choice as much as a technical one. Blends can also behave differently under heat β€” polyester can be damaged by high-temperature pressing, so care labels need to be accurate. How the fibre is knitted affects the result too; our knitting process guide explains why.

How to Choose

Start from your customer and climate. Warm-weather everyday wear leans cotton. Harsh-wash, high-use or low-price products lean blends. If you’re unsure, sample two compositions side by side β€” the difference in feel is far easier to judge in hand than on paper. For general summer fabric choices for consumers, see our earlier post on cotton vs polyester in Pakistan. To make your choice unambiguous for the factory, put composition, GSM and finish on a tech pack β€” see our tech pack guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CVC better than 100% cotton?

It depends on the goal. CVC is more durable and shrinks less, while 100% cotton is more breathable and often preferred for premium or sensitive-skin products.

Does a polyester blend pill more?

It can, particularly with lower-quality yarn or loose knits. Good yarn selection and finishing reduce pilling, so ask for a rub test on the sample.

Can I test more than one fabric before bulk?

Yes. Sampling starts from a 1-set MOQ, so you can compare compositions before committing to production of around 50 pieces per style.
