10 Questions to Ask a Clothing Manufacturer Before You Order (and Red Flags to Watch For)

Choosing a clothing manufacturer is one of the biggest decisions a brand makes. The wrong partner means late deliveries, inconsistent quality and money lost on stock you cannot sell. The right one makes everything easier. Before you pay a deposit, a short list of the right questions will tell you far more than a polished website or a low quote. Here are ten questions to ask any manufacturer, what a good answer sounds like, and the warning signs to watch for.
1. What do you specialise in?
A factory that makes knitwear every day is a better bet for hoodies than one that mostly makes woven shirts. Ask what products they make most, and ask for examples similar to yours. A good answer is specific. A warning sign is “we make everything”.
2. What are your minimum order quantities and how does sampling work?
Ask for the MOQ per style and per colour, the sample cost, and how long samples take. At Blaze Garments, sampling starts from a 1-set MOQ and production from around 50 pieces per style. If you are starting small, see our low-MOQ guide for startups.
3. What is your typical lead time?
Get lead times for sampling, production and shipping separately, and ask what can cause delays. Be wary of any promise that sounds too fast. Our lead times guide shows realistic timelines.
4. Where do you source fabric, and is it tested?
Ask who supplies the fabric, whether you can approve it before cutting, and what testing is done (GSM, shrinkage, colour fastness). A good answer includes a clear approval step. See our GSM guide for what to ask about weight.
5. How do you control quality?
Look for checks at several points: incoming fabric, during sewing and before packing. Ask what happens when a batch fails. A manufacturer with a clear answer has done this before. See why samples and bulk differ and how to prevent it.
6. Can I see your factory and past work?
A video call, photos or a visit helps you confirm that the machines, people and process are real. Ask for examples of similar products they have made. See inside our Lahore factory.
7. How is pricing structured and what is included?
Ask for a breakdown (fabric, trims, labour, branding, packaging) and the payment terms. Confirm what is and is not included: sampling, labels, packaging, freight. Compare quotes on the same specification, not just the same headline price. See our MOQ and pricing guide.
8. Who will I talk to, and how fast do you respond?
Clear, quick communication prevents most problems. Ask who your contact is, how updates are shared and how quickly questions are answered. Slow replies during the quote stage usually mean slow replies during production.
9. What is your export and shipping experience?
Ask which countries they ship to, which shipping terms they offer (FOB or delivered duty paid) and who handles documents. If you sell in the US or UK, read our guides for US brands and UK brands.
10. How do you protect my designs?
Ask whether they will sign a confidentiality agreement, and how they handle your tech packs and artwork. A professional manufacturer takes this seriously and will not use your design for anyone else.
Red Flags to Watch For
- A price far below every other quote with no explanation
- No physical address, no factory photos and no references
- Refusing to send a sample, or pushing you to pay in full upfront
- Vague answers about fabric, testing or quality checks
- A trading company posing as a factory. Our manufacturer vs supplier guide explains how to tell the difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a clothing manufacturer is reliable?
Look for specific answers, a clear sampling and approval process, references or examples of similar work, and open communication. Order a sample before committing to bulk.
Should I visit the factory before ordering?
If you can, yes. If not, a video call and photos can show you the machines, staff and process.
How many manufacturers should I get quotes from?
Three to five is usually enough. Send each the same tech pack so the quotes are comparable.
